My Sanctuary: Alice Wawrik
While home has often been considered a feminine space, too few opportunities have been given to women to tell their stories about the places they inhabit and the objects they value. Our sanctuaries articulate our unique aesthetics, rituals and needs and so become a beautiful expression of selfhood.
In this series we discover the stories of home and life told by some of the wonderful women in our midst.
Alice Wawrik is the founder of By Alice Home which sources and sells unique tableware and objects for the home. Through sourcing and reviving vintage and antique pieces Alice is able to give objects that might have been disregarded a second life. Her zeal for sustainability and longevity translates into playful and idiosyncratic homewares — Alice shows us some favorite pieces in her space at home.
“I love to add dyed sea urchins on the table for decoration! The scalloped plates are all made in Italy, and the vintage bamboo cutlery is what I grew up with and I will always pick up a set wherever I find them”
“Another corner of my sanctuary is my bedroom. I am in love with the bobbin legs on this antique pink bobbin table that was found for me a couple of years ago in a Brighton flea market. My bedside lamps are a pair of vintage pink ceramic lamps from the 1960s with hand marbled lampshades on. I love to mix old and new handmade pieces”
“I am a born and bred Londoner. From when I was a child, I would always get excited about unusual objects and antiques, and finally have now turned my passion into a business! I am constantly traveling and looking for unusual antiques or vintage pieces. I hops you find my pieces fun and quirky and know that you are also helping the planet by buying vintage and from small artisans”
“My bamboo and rattan screen is a vintage pieces I sourced, as well as the scalloped drinks trolley which I then have hand laCquered in London. This bright and quirky Tamegroute style lamp base is by Penny Morrison and the lampshade is silk lined and handmade in the UK”
