KANA London x &YOU
There is an unequalled sense of serenity that comes from honoring the subtle flaws in natural processes. With this in mind, we looked to sculptor and ceramicist, Ana Kerin of KANA London for her innovative approach to traditional ceramic practices, exploring the subtle imperfections and inconsistencies of hand built aesthetics in an exclusive collaboration for &YOU. Opting to work by hand rather than at the wheel, Kerin combines unique mixtures of clay and develops her own glazing recipes, resulting in functional ceramics that resonate with an imperfect, and irresistible, beauty.
The collection is the coalescence of the four classical elements – earth, air, water and fire, and a nod to the ancient principles of Charbagh, represented by the duality of glassware and ceramics in a single capsule. The raw materials are organic in nature, altered by the elements of air and fire to assume their final form. The tiny bubbles and inconsistencies in the hand-blown recycled glassware, along with the application of a mixture of various rare clays in the ceramics gives each piece a unique and earthy texture that pays homage to the natural beauty of things imperfect. A sense of honoring nature is explored not only through the materials, but the sustenance that can be served within each piece.
A formal background in Fine Art followed by training in sculpture (at the Academy of Fine Art and Design in Slovenia and the National College of Art & Design in Ireland, respectively), led the Slovenian-born sculptor to apply the principles of her fine art experience – the tactile, hand built aesthetics, subtle imperfections and inconsistencies in material – into functional ceramics at her studio, KANA London. Each item from KANA London is crafted by hand, honoring the symbiotic relationship between art and material, and further emphasizing the individuality of each piece. Small imperfections such as fingerprints, superficial cracks & indentations are part of the nature of the technique.
Celebrating the inconsistencies and imperfections of human nature rather than homogeneity, the collection of functional ceramics and glassware employs an imperfect, and irresistible, beauty.
